On Sep 13, 1944, a princess from India lay dead at Dachau concentration camp. She had been tortured by the Nazis, then shot in the head. Her name was Noor Inayat Khan. Wireless operators in France had a life expectancy of six weeks. Noor was actively transmitting for over three times as long.

While she was in France, every other wireless operator in her network was slowly picked off until she was the last radio link between London and Paris. It was “the most dangerous and important post in France”.

She was offered a way back to Britain and refused.

In fact, in her transmissions to London, she once said that she was having the time of her life, and thanked them for giving her the opportunity to do this.

She was captured by the Gestapo, but never gave up: she made three attempt escapes. One involved asking to take a bath, insisting on being allowed to close the door to preserve her modesty, and then clambering onto the roof of the Gestapo HQ in Paris.

Her last word before being shot was, “Liberté!”

The term BAMF was coined for such persons.

Kushiel’s Dart if you’re feeling like a female protagonist; Name of the Wind for a man confessing his backstory. I enjoyed both?

I’ve been struggling with Kushiel’s Dart — I’ve found it to be pretty dry so far. I might give The Name of the Wind another shot, though xD

I wanted to ay so much more but the answer box wouldn’t let me >.<

Kushiel’s Dart was hard to get through, and I don’t think I managed to muster the effort to read the sequels, but it did get better after a while (unfortunately, I think that point was about halfway through, which is far too much to have to get through when it’s not so good).

The Name of the Wind will probably also come across as pretty dry, since at times it can feel a bit forced and hard to slog through. I found that I wanted to roll my eyes and tell the narrator to get on with the plot and stop talking about how awesome he was.

That said, I ended up enjoying both books, so take from that what you will?

Have you read any of Tanya Huff’s Valor series? It’s Science Fiction, so a completely different ballpark, but I’ve been enjoying it much more than the above two books. I’ve only read the first two or three books, though.

I haven’t read her Valor series, but I DID read her entire Blood Ties series. I remember finding her writing incredibly dry and wondering how I got through five books XD I find myself a wee leery to try any of her other books out, but who knows! I’ve got authors whose one series I love and another series I can’t stand to read, so!

I’m sorry if you don’t like them in the end! D: I should have reread them before saying anything because it’s been so long but augh.

I tried reading one of her other books, something about a Wizard and a Grove, and I couldn’t get past the first chapter, I couldn’t reconcile with any aspect of it: the characters; the style of writing; the plot, I just wanted all of them to stop. But I reread what books I have of the Valor series every so often because I really enjoy those.

I have been so behind on reading for so long I must go read now and find good books AUGH.

Thinking of books that I’ve read reasonably recently, the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld was pretty fun, as was Howl’s Moving Castle.

I’ve read a couple (I finished one and am in the midst of the second one, if I’m honest) of Margaret Atwood’s books in the last few months - Alias Grace (it was kind of entertaining to read but it doesn’t answer the fundamental question that it posed at the start and I was sO FrUsTrAtEd) and The Year of The Flood, which I’m not yet halfway through and keep getting thoroughly confused as to which character is which. It also keeps skipping back and forth in the timeline, which is not helping at all.

Of the graphic novels I’ve read recently, The Deep has been lots of fun (I’m overusing that word. Sorry) to read - I met the author at one of the cons last year and he described reading it as ‘dancing on a field of daisies with rainbows and unicorns’ and weirdly enough it kind of works. Even though the actual story is about a family of explorers who go around in their huge submarine and are generally pretty kick-ass.

THOSE ARE THE ONLY BOOKS I CAN THINK OF WITHOUT GETTING UP AND LOOKING and it’s so cold and the heater’s over here so, uhm. Yes. Books. I’M SORRY
